  1. User Consumption Forecast: It uses a rolling analysis of the past seven days of your household's energy consumption.
  2. Solar Generation Forecast: Provided by Open Climate Fix, this forecast leverages advanced weather data to predict your solar system's output.
  3. Tariff Data: This forecast is more static for tariffs like Flux (which don’t fluctuate), but requires frequent updates for dynamic tariffs such as Agile. 

Loop Optimise processes these inputs to create a half-hourly schedule for your battery. This schedule is designed to maximise your financial benefit by optimising charging and discharging actions. In cases where the forecast data becomes unavailable, Loop Optimise will put your battery into “default mode”—meaning it will follow a non-optimised pattern until the forecast can be updated again.

The beauty of Loop Optimise is that it does the "heavy lifting" for you, automatically adjusting your battery settings to align with your energy tariff and personal usage patterns. This hands-off approach provides users with seamless optimisation - and removes the need for manual adjustments, which can be tricky to make on some battery manufacturers' platforms.

 

Navigating the Loop Optimise Platform

The Today Page

The first screen users see on the Loop Optimise platform is the Today Page, which provides a breakdown of the battery’s actions and performance. Here, users can see:

  • Battery Statuses: This indicates whether the battery has been charging from the grid, discharging to the grid, or in a “hold” state (charging only from solar).
  • Next Expected Action: A preview of the next command based on forecast data.
  • Summary of Today’s Actions: A snapshot of battery performance throughout the day, updated every 30 minutes.

This page also offers a visual display with a graph showing actual battery charge percentages alongside the forecasted actions, so users can see the platform’s expectations versus real-time data.

Calculating Usage: Understanding the Figures

Loop Optimise provides figures on energy usage so far today, including:

  • Generation from Solar Panels
  • Household Energy Consumption
  • Energy Exported to and Imported from the Grid

It’s important to note that Loop Optimise uses data from your inverter (the brain of your HEMS) rather than the smart meter data that energy suppliers use to calculate bills. This can create small discrepancies, meaning that the import and export data shown in Loop Optimise may differ slightly from what’s reflected on your energy bill.

 

The Savings Page: Daily and Total Savings

The Savings Page shows users a breakdown of their daily and cumulative savings. These savings are calculated by comparing the “Loop Optimise” mode against an "unmanaged battery" scenario.

  • Daily Savings: This figure assumes that both Loop Optimise and an unmanaged battery start the day at the same charge level. It then shows the cost difference between optimised and non-optimised usage, factoring in solar generation and consumption.
  • Total Savings: This represents the cumulative savings over time. Since Loop Optimise manages energy flow differently than a dumb battery, each day’s starting charge level may vary. As a result, the total savings figure may not be a simple sum of daily savings.

The Savings page visualises when import and export occur, which may be due to battery charging and discharging, or consumption and excess solar. Colour-coded graphs show these periods relative to tariff times, helping users understand how Loop Optimise times these actions to maximise their earnings.

  • Charging Periods: Typically during low-cost tariff times, highlighted in the graph.
