Living Beyond Our Means: What is Earth Overshoot Day?

Imagine maxing out your credit card months before the year ends—that’s what we do to Earth’s resources every year and Earth Overshoot Day serves as a reminder.

Once we get past this point, for the rest of the year we're using resources faster than nature can replenish them.

We're Consuming More Each Year

On August 1st, we officially blew past Earth's annual budget for natural resources. Earth Overshoot Day has been creeping up earlier each year since the 1970s, shining a spotlight on the widening gap between our consumption and the planet's ability to keep up. Just four years ago, this day landed on August 22nd. Right now, we’d need 1.7 Earths to meet our resource demands.

If everyone on the planet consumed resources at the same rate as we do in the UK, Earth Overshoot Day would fall on June 3rd. That's nearly two months earlier than the global average.

4 Ways You Can Take Action at Home

But, there is hope: by making small changes in our daily lives, we can push Earth Overshoot Day further back and help restore balance to our planet.

  1. Cut Your Energy Use. By keeping your energy use to a minimum you can avoid using more dirty grid energy.
  2. Use Eco-Mode. This settings change can make an impact, but 15% of Loop users aren't using it!
  3. Talk to Others. By sharing your green efforts, you have the power to influence others
  4. Consider Solar Panels. Installing solar panels can cut your carbon footprint by 1.6 tonnes each and every year!

We're All About Decarbonising, Big and Small

Why bother swapping your annual holiday flights for a train if the wealthy and famous fly around in private jets? We get it—it's a common sentiment. But let’s talk about the bigger picture and how we’re making systemic changes towards a greener future.

At Loop, we focus on helping you minimise your energy use. And we’re backed by our parent company, Low Carbon, who are creating renewable energy at scale. Together, we're tackling climate change from all angles, making it easier for you to trust that your efforts are part of a larger, impactful mission.
