Summer Energy Stealers

The biggest energy stealers are devices that heat and cool, and in the summer months, air conditioning is a major culprit. Running your AC every night could cost you around £14 a week. Instead, consider using a standard electric fan, which costs just 20-40p per day to run.

Planning a BBQ this summer? You might be tempted to plug in an extra fridge to keep drinks cool, but remember to turn it off when it's no longer needed. An extra fridge can add £74 a year to your energy bill.

If you're making the most of the longer, lighter evenings by spending time in the garden, be cautious with outdoor heating devices. Patio heaters can add up to £55 a month to your bill. While not as luxurious, blankets and hot water bottles can keep you warm just as effectively.

And if you're fortunate enough to own a hot tub, it could be adding a whopping £300 a month to your energy costs! To keep these expenses down, use a cover to retain heat and try placing the hot tub in a sunny spot in your garden.

What Can You Do to Keep Cool Without Adding to Your Bill?

  1. Let in cool air and encourage airflow. When the air temperature is cooler outside, opening up windows on opposite sides of the room will release the hot air trapped inside. This is most effective at night or in the earlier hours of the morning

  2. Make the most of your loft. As hot air rises, it can often get trapped on the second floor. If your home office is upstairs or you’re struggling to sleep in the heat, simply cracking your loft hatch open will allow the hot air to rise further.

  3. Keep warm air out. Keeping the warm air out is as simple as keeping windows and curtains shut! This is especially important on the side of your home where the sun is shining.

  4. Use a fan to enhance the breeze. The positioning of your fan is vital to how it works. Placing them in front of an open window will encourage fresh air to be blown throughout rooms - you can also use multiple fans to create a cross current. Go a step further by placing ice cubes in front of the fan to create a chill breeze.

  5. Avoid the oven. Using the oven heats up your surroundings. Sticking to cold meals or switching to the air fryer or microwave are cost-effective and cool ways to reduce your bill and keep cool.
