Who is eligible for the smart meter compensation?

You will be eligible for compensation if:

  • You have had to wait over 6 weeks for a smart meter installation. This only applies to new meter installs.
  • Your installation has failed due to an issue within your supplier’s control. This includes issues like the engineer not having the correct equipment with them to complete the installation.
  • You have reported an issue and not received a plan of resolution within 5 working days. After an issue is reported, suppliers need to report on what they have done to assess the issue and the steps they are going to take to fix it. This includes issues with smart meters and in-home display devices.

How Do I Receive My Smart Meter Compensation?

If you are eligible, you should receive your compensation automatically. The money will come from your energy supplier, and you can claim for multiple issues. Households will only be compensated if problems arise on or after 23 February.

What If My Smart Meter Goes ‘Dumb’?

If your smart meter stops working in smart mode and turns ‘dumb’, you will not yet be eligible for compensation. However, Ofgem is planning to extend the parameters of the scheme, which will see households receive compensation if their meter is stuck outside of smart mode for longer than 90 days.

What if my In-Home Display Is Broken?

If you had your smart meter installed within the last year, you should be able to request a free replacement in-home display (IHD) from your supplier. However, some companies charge for replacements after the 12-month limit is up.

Luckily, that’s where the free Loop app comes in. If your IHD is lost, broken, or you were never given one, you can simply sign up to Loop. Connect your smart meter to access your energy data straight from your phone.
