Mary, an Octopus Flux customer, was looking for a way to maximise her earnings, but her initial setup wasn’t taking full advantage of her solar array or battery. After signing up to Loop Optimise, she saw immediate improvements.

### Background

Mary, an Octopus Flux customer, lives in a home equipped with a 5 kW solar array and two 6.5 kWh Growatt batteries. Initially, her installer left her with a basic battery schedule that only charged from her solar production and discharged solely for self-consumption. Despite her investment in solar and battery storage, this setup meant that Mary was only using about 10% of her battery’s capacity, leaving significant potential for savings untapped.

Mary’s tariff, Octopus Flux, offers notable financial incentives through a “cheap rate” window from 2 am to 5 am and a “peak rate” from 4 pm to 7 pm, providing an opportunity to charge and discharge the battery at strategic times. However, the previous configuration did not account for these tariff benefits, limiting her ability to maximise savings.

 

### Switching to Loop Optimise

In June, Mary joined a trial for Loop Optimise—a solution designed to increase energy savings through an AI-driven approach to battery scheduling. As soon as Loop Optimise was activated, Mary saw an immediate change in the way her battery operated. Instead of charging solely through solar or discharging only for direct usage, Loop Optimise implemented a daily schedule that maximised her savings by fully charging and discharging the battery in sync with the Octopus Flux tariff.

This completely automated AI optimisation respects both the manufacturer’s warranty and the battery’s health, aligning the charging and discharging cycles with the optimal times to take advantage of lower energy costs during the tariff’s cheap-rate hours and making the most of selling to the grid during the peak rates whenever possible.

 

### Results and Savings

With the enhanced schedule from Loop Optimise, Mary has been saving approximately £1 per day. Over the course of a month, these savings add up to around £30—a substantial improvement over the initial schedule, which barely utilised the battery’s full capacity.

Initially, Mary was concerned about having less energy stored in the battery during the evenings, especially as it impacted her energy usage for heating. However, the consistent daily savings have reassured her.
