Solar Talk: Interview with Richard from UpsideDownFork

Written by The Loop Team | Oct 10, 2024

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Richard, also known as UpsideDownFork on YouTube, about his experience with solar energy. As a well-known Greentech creator and advocate for sustainable home energy, Richard shares his experience with solar panels with his audience to educate and inspire. We caught up with him about his journey towards installing solar.

Are Solar Panels Right for You?

Whether you're curious about the benefits of solar energy, want to understand the installation process, or are eager to learn about the latest innovations in the solar industry, we've got you covered. Our newsletter is packed with expert insights, helpful tips, and answers to all your burning questions about solar power.

Why Install Solar Panels

For Richard, a father of three with a busy household, energy consumption was a major factor in considering solar panels. With the rising cost of energy and a growing awareness of sustainability, solar was the perfect solution to help reduce his home’s carbon footprint and future-proof his household’s energy needs.

Richard points to several factors that motivated him to finally make the change: the energy crisis, working from home, and the need to prepare for the future. He notes that with electrification becoming more prevalent, from cars to heating systems, it felt like the right time to invest.

Researching Solar Panels

Like many, Richard’s solar journey has been an extended one. "It’s been a long road," he explains, detailing the eight years it took from initial interest to installation. While the process might be lengthy for some, he encourages others to start researching early, as solar technology is continuously advancing and becoming more accessible.

When Richard first started researching solar, he found a lot of conflicting information online. "I needed facts," he says, explaining that while Google searches can be overwhelming, YouTube played a significant role in demystifying the solar panel process. By watching videos, he gained the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions.

Choosing the Right Solar System

Richard’s advice for those considering solar is simple: "Go as big as you can." While general recommendations suggest choosing a system that covers 120% of your annual energy consumption, Richard went for 200%. This approach allowed him to maximise his energy generation, even covering a northwest-facing roof that has performed better than expected.

With scaffolding going up, Richard decided to maximise his solar potential. "If you’re going to put scaffolding up, you might as well cover the roof," he jokes. He opted for a total of 22 solar panels, significantly increasing his energy output.

The Installation Process

Richard was pleasantly surprised by how non-invasive the installation process was. Compared to other home improvements, solar installation was quick and seamless, taking just a couple of days with minimal disruption. Richard states that he and his wife "couldn't believe" just how stealthy the installers were. He jokes that they barely noticed the installation.

In addition to solar panels, Richard has made several eco-friendly upgrades to his home, including installing a heat pump, and EV charger, and improving insulation. Richard comments that these steps have worked together to not only 'help balance the load on the grid" but has also "made the payback much quicker", ensuring that his home is future-proof.

Richard's Solar Strategy

Richard’s approach is one of seasonal offsetting. In summer, he exports as much energy as possible, which helps to cover the increased consumption during winter. Additionally, he shortens his payback period by buying energy at lower rates and selling it for higher prices, a strategy that has worked well in reducing costs. He comments that a quick payback time is "much easier to achieve" as he is "buying energy [for] a lot cheaper than we're selling it".

One of the most exciting parts of solar energy for Richard has been the financial benefit. During the summer months, his family’s energy bills turn negative, with energy companies paying them over £100 a month for the energy they export. Over the course of a year, he expects to be net zero and is tracking that progress on his YouTube channel.

Optimisation and Savings

To optimise his energy usage, Richard uses a tariff called Octopus Agile, which allows him to monitor energy markets and sell his solar energy during peak times at a higher rate (15p per kilowatt-hour). Additionally, he sets appliances like the tumble dryer to run at 3 AM when energy prices are at their lowest, maximising savings by buying energy at 5p per kilowatt-hour.

When Richard first looked into solar, the payback period was estimated to be around 20 years. Today, it has dropped significantly to about seven years, making the return on investment much more attractive. This quicker turnaround time is a key reason why Richard claims solar panels are now "more enticing for regular people" who need to think about "spending their money wisely".

Looking ahead, Richard predicts that automation and integration will be the next big trends in solar and home energy tech. As tariffs become more flexible and automation tools become more sophisticated, he expects households to benefit from more efficient energy management systems.

Advice for Solar Newbies

As a YouTuber, Richard has been able to help others make informed decisions about solar. Many of his subscribers have installed solar panels after watching his videos, and Richard is proud to have played a part in their sustainable energy journeys. He’s also keen to dispel the negativity often found in media coverage of solar, explaining that many people find their systems perform better than expected.

"The quicker you get solar panels, the quicker you’ll see a return on your investment," Richard advises. He emphasises the importance of research, recommending YouTube channels and Facebook groups as excellent resources. And finally, "I’ve never met anyone who regretted installing solar panels," he adds.
